The Urban Dead (2023).

The Urban Dead is an archival project dedicated to people that are gone, but still occupy a physical space within our space and time. This project aims to explore the physical manifestation of rememberance and how public utilizes the urban system of the dead. Through the lens of Hollywood Forever Cemetary, I was able to capture a space,

This photobook also tries to work as a physical manifestation of rememberance by choosing to showcase some of the archival footage that some families of the deceased decided to share in LifeStory Archive that was started by Hollywood Forever: these life stories are important to remember and honor, thus, I hope I brought these stories and the people residing in Hollywood Forever cemetary to light.
BASQA (2023).
BASQA–translated to OTHER–is a magazine that aims to shed light on the people that are neglected by mainstream local Kazakhstani media. Through the use of film, poetry, photography, architecture, and the stories of Kazakhstani people from all walks of life, BASQA is a small magazine trying to tell stories and give space for the unheard and untold stories.

Peri / Jeztırnaq (2022).

Peri / Jeztırnaq is a photo book and a photo series photographed and designed by Anel Alpysbayeva. Peri and Jeztırnaq are based on the characters of Kazakh folklore. This photo series aims to shed light into the stories of these two beings under a modern spin. Interestingly, Kazakh folklore is passed down orally, thus, making information varied depending on who’s retelling those stories, so the structure of the book follows a non-hierarchical and non-linear storytelling style as well.
